Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Fighters Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of heroes, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, demons, and sinister influences increasing in strength within the urban setting.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of adventurers who will split off from the central cast to undertake their independent quest, distinct from the remaining groups.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (played by Travis), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Planners, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear mismatched, but the events of the latest installment show why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a intense initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing started the story’s plot—manipulated the enemy for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and stealing all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, above the city, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and closest confidant, wants revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the northern area and cautions that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having defied his relatives’ demands to execute the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the party access areas they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor vowed a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • Teor is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the rest of the cast members to form the Seekers and Strategists tables.

Fans can look forward to learning which adventurers will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on October 24.
