Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to reduce the amount of AI-made videos appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the platform disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI-generated clips.
Testing and Rollout
This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a global rollout. This shift comes amid a increase in AI-generated material, spurred by recent content generation software.
The Broader AI Trend
Recent reports that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding channels on a competing service exclusively feature clips produced artificially. A large amount of this output is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, mass-produced content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.
“We know from our community that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we want to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a platform representative.
Scale of AI Content
TikTok disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as AI-generated. Collectively, more than 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the platform each day, making AI content a limited percentage of its total content library.
User Control Features
Viewers will be able to limit or boost the amount of artificial media they view by accessing the topic control option in the platform and picking AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the setting cover news, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.
Platform Guidelines
TikTok’s rules oblige content makers to label lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of well-known individuals or emergencies. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is unmarked can be taken down under its user guidelines.
Furthermore, the platform will henceforth attach an artificially created label to content produced via its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing AI-generated material. This action is intended to stop users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also introducing a $2 million educational fund for experts and institutions to create informative material about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit educational bodies specializing in training programming and robotics.
Content Safety Approach
The video-sharing app has justified its safety measures, following debate over plans to lay off a large number of review team members in the UK. The company is expected to cut hundreds of positions in its user protection department in the UK capital, with trade unions and online safety experts raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A trust and safety lead clarified that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by filtering out the most distressing content ahead of it has to be seen by people. TikTok announced a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.
“We think that it’s essential to combine people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
